One horse repeatedly kicked, another injured Union Bridge, MD (US)Incident Date: Tuesday, Jun 17, 2008 County: Carroll
Disposition: Alleged
Alleged: Anthony Edward Woodie
A 35-year-old Union Bridge man was charged on Sept 18, 2008 with animal cruelty after the Carroll County Sheriff's Office identified him through surveillance video kicking a horse and possibly causing injuries to a second horse that led to its death, the sheriff's office said.
The second horse, Blue, had to be euthanized weeks later because of serious wounds he received after becoming entangled in a fence. Blue was a 25-year-old gelding that was used to train new riders at the Snader Farm, outside New Windsor, authorities said.
"Blue was brutalized," said Maj. Phil Kasten, a spokesman for the sheriff's office. "He couldn't recover from his injuries."
The horses were being kept in the same pasture at the farm, in the 2300 block of Marston Road, on June 23 -- the day the attacks occurred, Kasten said. A video camera at the farm's business office recorded the attack on one of the horses, which occurred at 5 a.m., Kasten said.
After enhancing surveillance video recorded on the day of the attack, sheriff's deputies identified a former employee as the one who kicked the horse just hours before Blue was discovered injured, the sheriff's office said. The suspect was not caught on video kicking Blue, but investigators believe he assaulted the animal and that his actions contributed to the horse's death, according to Kasten.
Authorities identified the suspect as Anthony Edward Woodie, of the 100 block of S. Main St. Authorities said Woodie was a truck driver at the farm who was fired April 1.
In addition to animal cruelty charges, Woodie faces an additional charge of opening an enclosure because authorities believe he removed and stole gates at the farm, authorities said. References« MD State Animal Cruelty Map « More cases in Carroll County, MD
