Pet goat shot, resulting in death
Linden, NC (US)

Incident Date: Friday, Jun 27, 2008
County: Cumberland

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Sharri Amalie Kandarczyk

A Linden woman charged with shooting a neighbor's pet goat in July has been recharged with the crime after she allegedly failed to keep an out-of-court agreement between herself and the animals' owner.

In a related development, the animal's owner has also in turn been charged with trespassing on the woman's property.

Sharri Amalie Kandarczyk, 41, of Our Way Lane was originally charged with cruelty to animals in early July for allegedly shooting a pet goat named Edna that belonged to a neighbor's 6-year-old daughter.

Mrs. Kandarczyk allegedly shot the goat June 27 after it reportedly escaped its pen and ate flowers from her garden.

The goat, which was shot twice, died four days later after a veterinarian's failed attempt to save it. The original charges were pressed against Mrs. Kandarczyk soon after.

Edna's owner, Tommy Young, also of Our Way Lane, said he had the charges refiled against Mrs. Kandarczyk last week after a check that was part of an out-of-court settlement failed to clear.

Several phone calls made yesterday to Mrs. Kandarczyk's home were not answered and a message left at her work was not returned by press time this morning.

"The settlement was for the vet bill and the price of the goat, $1,701," Mr. Young said. "She wanted to settle it out of court ... we settled out of court the first time and the check she wrote bounced, so she didn't fulfill her end of the agreement."

Mr. Young said yesterday he has been charged by the Kandarczyks with trespassing on his ATV, a charge he denies and says is part of a pattern of harassment since the incident.

"She's never apologized. In fact, she's called the law on me multiple times," Mr. Young said. "Every time something happens on that road, the cops come to my house even if it isn't me, even if I didn't ride my four-wheeler that day."

Mr. Young said on the morning of the shooting he heard a gunshot, which was not unusual in the rural area where he lives.

He said until that morning he'd never spoken to the Kandarczyks.

"I didn't think anything about it, so when I see her coming down the road, I waved," Mr. Young said. "Then she pulled into my driveway and said, 'You need to come get your goat. My husband's getting a gun and is going to shoot it.'"

Mr. Young said he apologized and went to retrieve the animal but found it laying on another neighbor's porch. It had been shot in the leg and in the stomach.

"I went off. I freaked out," Mr. Young said. "I was like, 'You're shooting my animal? All it did was eat your flowers. I would have bought you new flowers and planted them myself.'"

Later, during the investigation, Mrs. Kandarczyks reportedly admitted to having shot Edna.

Mr. Young said he bought Edna in December as a present for his 6-year-old daughter Zoe. Edna, he said, was much more than just another barnyard animal.

"She (Zoe) wanted a goat, so we went and got her a goat," Mr. Young said. "I'd spent a lot of time with her, taught her how to walk on a leash.

"She was like a dog. She would come and jump in your lap like a dog does. She'd lick you on your hand. She meant a lot to us," he said.

For now, Mr. Young said he is resigned to let the process play out in court.

"It's going to be kind of odd, her with a cruelty to animals charge and me with a trespassing charge," he said. "And we're both going to be in court the same day."

Both Mr. Young and Mrs. Kandarczyk are due in District Court Sept. 22 on their respective charges.
