A Muncie man is facing several charges after his ex-girlfriend says he kicked her six-week-old kitten across the room and into a fan.
The woman says she was breaking up with her boyfriend, 21-year-old Zach White, when he flew into a rage. She called 911 to report what happened.
The main reason she rushed to make the call from the gas station phone booth at 1:00 am was because of the tiny thing tucked under her arm and wrapped in fabric.
"He killed or he halfway killed my cat in front of me. I have him here with me now. I'm out here on Memorial," she told police.
White is charged with kicking the woman's tiny kitten in a fit of rage at her apartment.
Ron White with Muncie Animal care and Control says the animal was in very poor shape.
"We found the animal foaming at the mouth, possibly broken back, crushed ribs, pretty much almost dead. It was a pretty powerful kick. We don't like to see animals suffer, so we euthanized the animal," White said. "No animal should have to live in cruelty."
At Muncie's animal shelter, they try to ensure cats can live all their nine lives. But White worries about people too. He says animal abuse is often a gateway to domestic abuse.
"If you're abusing an animal there is a chance later on you are going to be abusing other things," he said.
Zach White faces animal cruelty, pot and public intoxication charges.
Case UpdatesThe trial of a Ridgeville man who allegedly fatally injured his girlfriend's kitten after the woman ended their relationship has been set for Groundhog's Day -- Feb. 2.
Zachariah H. White, 21, is charged with cruelty to an animal, a Class D felony carrying a standard 18-month prison term, and possession of marijuana, a Class A misdemeanor with a maximum one-year jail term.
Delaware Circuit Court 3 Judge Robert Barnet Jr. this week entered not-guilty pleas on White's behalf.
White's ex-girlfriend told authorities he became upset when she announced she was leaving him on Aug. 27.
After punching walls and a refrigerator in her West 14th Street apartment, the woman said, White picked up her six-month-old black kitten, named Spot, and kicked the animal, which struck a ceiling fan before falling to the floor.
An animal control officer said the kitten's back was believed to have been broken.
The injured pet was euthanized.
Police said they found a bag of marijuana in White's car. | Source: Star-Press - Sept 25, 2008 Update posted on Sep 25, 2008 - 11:35PM |
