Two dogs shot
East Haven, CT (US)

Incident Date: Sunday, May 11, 2003
County: New Haven

Disposition: Open

Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

Two dogs from neighboring yards were shot May 11 while their owners were out celebrating Mother's Day. China, a 2-year-old Rottweiler, and Cocoa, a 1-year-old Rottweiler-pit bull mix, were chained in their neighboring back yards on Mountaintop and Skyview lanes when their owners left that day.

The owners came home to find their dogs severely injured, and eventually discovered the dogs had been shot.

The Virginia-based People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals announced the $1,000 reward Wednesday.

Both dogs were somehow unhooked from their chains and allowed to roam the neighborhood while the owners were gone. China's owners returned and found the dogs on the side of Laurel Street, about 100 yards from the home, bleeding.

People who crowded around the dogs assumed they had been hit by cars.

A veterinarian later determined the dogs had been shot and was forced to euthanize Cocoa because the bullet shattered the dog's spinal cord.

China has recovered.  Investigators had not determined Wednesday who might have shot the dogs.

PETA is looking for volunteers to post fliers to publicize the reward. Anyone interested can call 757-622-7382, extension 1578.  Tips on the investigation can be made to East Haven police at 468-3820, or New Haven police at 946-6316.
