A dozen people have now been charged in connection with a cockfight discovered in progress by law enforcement officials in a rural Sedgwick County barn on Aug. 24.

Acting on a tip, authorities arrived at a barn near Maize Road and 93rd North shortly after noon. They seized 22 roosters -- 11 of them dead -- along with paraphernalia linked to cockfighting, documentation of gambling and $5,000 in cash.

Eight men have been charged with attending a cockfight, three with providing the roosters for the fights and one man was charged with permitting the cockfight on his property, said Georgia Cole, a spokeswoman for the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office. All of the offenses are misdemeanors.

The cases have been set for trial on Sept. 22.
