Two men were arrested early Sunday after they allegedly robbed a home at gunpoint, forcing the residents into bedrooms and killing their dog, Springfield police said.

The victims, a 48-year-old woman and 24-year-old man, called police at 4 a.m. and reported that three masked men, including one armed with a handgun, forced their way through the front door at their home on the 200 block of 38th Place.

Once inside, the men made them go back into their bedrooms and demanded property from them, the victims said. As the intruders left through the back door, several shots were fired, including one that killed the victims' dog, the victims said.

Within a few minutes of the robbery call, a witness called police to report seeing men changing the license plates on a newer-model minivan on 33rd Street, police said. The minivan then headed westbound on International Street.

As police arrived in the area, Officer Evan Sether spotted two men walking away from a newer-model silver minivan on 30th Street near Olympic Street. The men fled as Sether tried to contact them, police said. Checking inside the van, police said they saw evidence of the earlier robbery.

A Eugene police department K-9 unit searched the area, and two men, Tyler Thomas Larson, 18, and Cody William Stogsdill, 20, were found hiding in area yards, police said.

Both men were charged with robbery, kidnap, burglary and animal abuse. Larson also was charged with possession of cocaine.

Case Updates

A 21-year-old Springfield man has been ordered to spend 65 years under the state's psychiatric security review board's control after he and other masked intruders robbed a family at gunpoint and shot their dog.

The Register Guard newspaper reports Lane County Circuit Judge Charles Zennach found Jason Eugene Jones guilty but for insanity of robbery, burglary and aggravated animal abuse.

Reports submitted by both defense and prosecution psychiatrists said Jones was unable to conform his conduct to the requirements of the law on the night of the break-in because he suffers from schizoid-affective disorder.

Zennach ordered Jones be committed to the state mental hospital for treatment.

Two young Junction City men received prison terms on Thursday for their roles in a Springfield robbery in which several masked intruders woke a sleeping family in the middle of the night and robbed them at gunpoint, with one of the intruders allegely shooting the family dog.

Lane County Circuit Judge Maurice Merten sentenced Tyler T. Larson, 18, to nearly five years in prison and Cody W. Stogsdill, 20, to three years in prison after they entered guilty pleas to some of the charges.

An alleged accomplice described by prosecutor Bob Lane as the group's ringleader, 20-year-old Jason Eugene Jones, remains in jail. He is scheduled for trial Oct. 30 on three counts of first-degree robbery, one count of first-degree burglary and one count of aggravated animal abuse, also a felony.

Lane told Merten that Larson and Stogsdill were part of a group of three or four people who drove Aug. 23 to the home of a Springfield resident who had a permit to grow marijuana for medicinal purposes. Lane said Jones used a handgun to demand money and drugs from the roused residents, who included a small child.

At the same time, Larson and others stole marijuana plants, Lane said.

As the robbers left the house, the family's dog began barking in the backyard, and Jones allegedly fired several shots, one of which killed the animal.

Two members of the household, including a grandmother who recounted being forced out of bed and held naked at gunpoint, spoke in court Thursday.

"My 3-year-old granddaughter will not sleep alone any more because of you," the grandmother told Larson.

Her daughter, the child's mother, spoke to both defendants.

"I was going to say that I hope you guys take this as a learning experience and change the path you're heading down, but I don't think you're going to," she said.

"Nobody deserves to be woken up at 4:30 in the morning and have them and their children and their mother held up at gunpoint over some stupid plants. I hope you enjoy your time (in prison)."

Stogsdill pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree burglary. He was the getaway car driver, according to his attorney, Rebecca Davis.

"He did not want any of this terrorizing to happen," she told Merten. "In fact, when he heard the gunshots, he thought it was the homeowner shooting at his buddies."

Stogsdill told Merten he was "remorseful for what happened."

"It's not what I signed up for," he said.

Larson, who pleaded guilty to first-degree burglary, did not speak in court.

His attorney, Brad Casgagnette, told Merten that his client had "a drug problem his family was trying to address" at the time of the robbery.

Under terms of their plea deals, both Larson and Stogsdill must serve at least 12 months of their prison sentences before becoming eligible for alternative programs such as an Oregon Department of Corrections boot camp.

They also were ordered to share responsibility in paying $450 restitution to the Springfield family.
