A man and a woman have been charged after a dead cat was found in a plastic bag in a canal in the Falkirk area.
The pet was discovered by a dog-walker in the Union Canal, near Vellore Road in Maddiston, on 8 July.
The bag had been weighed down with bricks and at the time animal welfare officers said it would have suffered a horrific death.
The man, aged 57, and woman, 52, have been reported to the procurator fiscal and are due in court in September.
Case UpdatesA man who tied up his neighbour's cat in a plastic bag and drowned it was last night blasted as "cruel and inhuman". Peter Johnstone yesterday pleaded guilty to stuffing the moggy inside supermarket carriers -- weighted down with bricks -- and tossing it into a canal.
Now the 57-year-old faces jail.
Sickened cops launched a hunt for the cat killer after its body was spotted in the water by a dog walker at Maddiston, Stirlingshire, in early July.
A police spokeswoman said: "Officers retrieved the bag and discovered a dead cat and bricks. These were obviously to weigh the bag down.
"This was a cruel and inhuman way to treat an animal."
Last night the SSPCA called for Johnstone, of Grangemouth, Stirlingshire, to be caged when he returns for sentencing at Falkirk Sheriff Court later this month.
A spokeswoman said: "This was a monstrous act. This creature would have taken a long time to die.
"There are often sinister reasons why a person should treat a cat like this."
Cops arrested Johnstone and his wife Susan, 51 - but her not guilty pleas were accepted by prosecutors yesterday.
Releasing Johnstone on bail while he awaits sentence, Sheriff Cecilia Sanderson told him: "It is a horrendous charge." | Source: The Scottish Sun - Sept 4, 2008 Update posted on Sep 6, 2008 - 1:49PM |
