At approximately 6:45 p.m. on August 1, Clearwater RCMP were contacted through BC Ambulance after a caller requested assistance for his mother who had been badly burned. Police attended and found that 79-year-old Kathleen Jennings had received extensive burns to her body after she had been doused with gasoline.
She was treated by BC Ambulance and police personnel, transported to Clearwater Hospital, and later transferred to Vancouver General to the Burn Unit where she remains in critical condition.
A small dog had also been soaked with gasoline and set on fire. The dog sustained injury and had to be put down.
Jennings' 51-year-old son Parker Matthias has now been charged with Attempted Murder and Animal Cruelty, and has been transferred to Kamloops where he will appear in the Kamloops courthouse later today.
Case UpdatesA B.C. man accused of setting his mother and her dog on fire will make his next court appearance later this month.
Kathleen Jennings, 79, died last Wednesday, days after she was doused with gasoline and set ablaze. Parker Matthias, 51, was charged with attempted murder after the Aug. 1 attack, though the RCMP are asking for the charges to be upgraded to murder. Matthias's lawyer has requested that proceedings be put off until Aug. 25 so the charges can be fully laid out.
Matthias has been in custody since the attack, which left Jennings with burns to half of her body.
He is also facing a charge of animal cruelty, after a small dog was put down because of similar injuries. | Source: Canadian Press - Aug 11, 2008 Update posted on Aug 11, 2008 - 8:09PM |
