Over 50 animals found neglected
West Haven, UT (US)

Incident Date: Sunday, Aug 31, 1997
County: Weber

Charges: Misdemeanor
Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Alice E. Gallardo

Alice E. Gallardo, 51, will stand trial Nov 3 on misdemeanor counts including four charges of aggravated animal cruelty which is punishable by up to one year in jail. Gallardo could also face fines of up to $40,000.

When an irrigation worker found three dead cows in a drainage canal, the Weber County sheriff's deputies were summoned to investigate Gallardo's property on Aug 31. Deputy Chad Barnett traced the cows to Gallardo's property. While checking her property he found 22 chickens, 14 cows, 12 dogs, seven horses, two peacocks and one goat that weren't receiving proper care.

The horses were the only animals on the farm that had a small amount of water. The other animals had no food or water in their enclosures. Several dogs were noted as being skinny and having clumpy, matting fur. A dead dog was found in one pen. Another dog was holding its water bowl in its mouth.

The authorities did confirm the three dead cows didn't belong to Gallardo, but she did admit the three cows were under her care.

The four aggravated charges are because of the three dead cows and the one dead dog.

According to the sheriff's records, Gallardo has had nine other animal related reports since 1991. One of the reports includes another cruelty to animals call and several complaints about barking dogs.
