Dogs neglected, one found dead
Stanley, NC (US)

Incident Date: Thursday, Aug 7, 2008
County: Lincoln

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Terrance Lee Vanepps, Jr.

A Lincoln County man is facing several animal cruelty charges after a sheriff's deputy discovered a decomposing dog and other malnourished dogs in the backyard outside his home.

Six of the dogs were so sick that they had to be euthanized Thursday, authorities say.

Terrance Lee Vanepps, Jr., 32, is charged with 10 counts of cruelty to animals, 12 counts of failing to have animals vaccinated for rabies and one count of failing to bury a dead animal.

The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office says a civil officer went to Vanepps' home on Cabin Lane in Stanley to serve an eviction notice. When the officer arrived, he found the dead dog and eight other malnourished dogs outside.

Inside the apartment were two more dogs, two puppies and several large snakes, lizards and ferrets. The officer said the pets inside were in good condition and had food and water.

Vanepps agreed to donate the animals to Lincoln County Animal Services. He may be able to get the healthy ones back, authorities say.
