Ames police are investigating the death of a cat that officials say was seriously injured when someone swung it by its tail.

The cat had to be euthanized after it was found by its owners in their driveway. Police said it appears that the cat had been swung by its tail on or about July 22.

The cat suffered a severe spinal cord injury and bruising around the base of its tail that officials said was the size of a clasped hand.

The cat suffered a serious spinal injury after it apparently was swung by its tail on July 22. It was swung with such force its vertebra was separated.

The cat, which had wandered off from its owners, dragged itself back to its home where it collapsed in the driveway. The cat was euthanized.

Lorna Lavender of Ames Animal Control says private pledges have increased the reward for information in the case to $1,500. Another person has pledge $1,000 for a psychiatric evaluation and treatment for whoever abused the cat.
