Owners of 39 dogs charged with ill treatment Greenville, SC (US)Incident Date: Monday, Jul 1, 2002 County: Greenville
Charges: Misdemeanor Disposition: Alleged
Alleged: » Milton A. Freeman » Brenda Gail Freeman
Milton A. Freeman, 50, and Brenda Gail Freeman, 48, of 1907 Roper Mountain Road have been arrested and charged with 39 counts of unnecessary torture and ill treatment when their dogs were found in horrible conditions on their property.
An anonymous tip told authorities that puppies might be in danger. The Humane Society sent an investigator with a search warrant to the Freeman's property to checkout the accusation.
Authorities found dogs ranging from Labradors to mixed breeds, green water and little food inside the house. The stench was so bad the workers had to wear masks. Dogs were kept in the bedrooms by baby gates or confined two or three at a time in small crates. Some of the dogs had matted fur and fleas, some had heart worms and intestinal worms which if they aren't treated can cause dogs to hemorrhage.
Judy Outlaw, executive director of the Greenville County Humane Society said, "We don't always take animals in an abuse case if we think we can work with the person or if the animal is not in extreme danger, but this was extreme neglect."
"If (people) want to have large quantities of animals (they) need to have a shelter or a kennel run that have one maybe two dogs in the run. It needs to have concrete floors, running water and drains."
The dogs will be groomed by several local animal groomers who have offered to donate their time and services. References- Greenville SC News - July 13, 2002
