A rabbit rescue group and Virginia Beach Animal Control officers took 31 rabbits from a shed in the Beach on Thursday.
John C. Doub, the founder of Virginia Rabbit Inc. in Chesapeake, said the property owner e-mailed his group asking it to come take the domestic rabbits from the shed, at a house on Wellfleet Court.
Twenty-nine of the rabbits are now at Virginia Beach SPCA. Two are at Rabbit Rescue Inc., Doub said.
"They're under close supervision," Doub said of the two. "We're not sure one's going to make it."
He said the shed was too hot for the rabbits.
Doub said he went before a Virginia Beach magistrate on Thursday asking that the couple that owned the rabbits be charged with animal cruelty. A spokesman for Virginia Beach police said animal control officers had not decided if the case warranted criminal charges.
