Cat shot to death
Scottdale, PA (US)

Incident Date: Thursday, Jul 31, 2008
County: Westmoreland

Disposition: Open

Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

A 5-year-old house cat named Possum was shot and killed recently at South Grant and Newman streets in Scottdale.

The cat's owner, Amy Melego, said Possum was shot through his hind quarters.

"He was the gentlest little thing," Melego said. "He did not roam. He was always within eyesight. That night he wanted to stay out and lay on the sidewalk, but now I wish I would have picked him up and brought him in."

Borough police Chief Barry Pritts said the cat was shot with "some type of rifle," likely a .22 caliber.

"There were entrance and exit wounds, so it wasn't a pellet gun," Pritts said.

No similar reports recently were filed with Scottdale police, but Melego said a neighbor's cat along South Chestnut Street survived a shooting earlier this month.

"I walked around and talked to neighbors," Melego said. "Both were shot with a .22 in the same part of the body."

Melego is offering a reward for information leading to the conviction of whoever is responsible for Possum's death. She also is encouraging pet owners to report such incidents to police.

"The point is, someone is shooting a gun in the Borough of Scottdale and no one seems to care," Melego said. "That really upsets me."
