Two dogs left on hot balcony, one dies Lawrence, MA (US)Incident Date: Thursday, Jul 31, 2008 County: Essex
Disposition: Alleged
Alleged: Ryan Colon
One dog has died after it and another were left outside in Lawrence in the heat with no food or water.
NewsCenter 5's Jack Harper reported Friday that the dogs' owner is scheduled to face animal abuse charges in court.
"Two dogs were removed. The one dog was taken to the hospital and it was determined that the body temperature of the dog that died was 108 degrees," Lawrence Police Department Chief John Romero said.
Banks, a French bulldog, survived, but the other dog died. A neighbor tried to help.
"(He) tried to put water in the bowl for the animals. At that point, realized one of the animals wasn't breathing and the other one was so weak it couldn't even get over to the bowl," Romero said.
The dog owner is Ryan Colon. His mother said that he's been so busy that he forgot about the animals.
"He fell asleep on the couch after feeding the dogs, after watering the dogs, after taking the dogs out. He fell asleep on the couch, and he got up and got ready to go to work and was thinking that his dogs were already in the house," she said.
Officials said that Banks is doing great. The MSPCA in Methuen is hoping to find the dog a place to live.
"He is very lucky, and I am not sure what the difference was between him and the other dog that protected him a little better. He may have dealt with it a little better, but in a short period of time he would have been in the same position, had someone not intervened," said Mike Keiley, of the MSPCA.
Anna Colon said that her son's apartment was recently flooded and his wife is days away from giving birth. She said that her son has been overwhelmed and that he lost track of a couple of dogs he loved very much. References« MA State Animal Cruelty Map « More cases in Essex County, MA
