Police need help to find the person who shot a dog near Hawk Junction. A two-year-old female German Shepherd mix was found on Forge Lake Road June 19.

The dog was shot once in the head, Ontario Provincial Police say.

The animal was treated at an animal hospital in Sault Ste. Marie. A bullet from an unknown weapon blinded the dog's right eye.

"At this point, we're not too sure what the reason why it was shot or why it was left in that condition," said Staff Sgt. Dan Dawson of the Superior East detachment in Wawa.

"It's causing us some concern as to why it was left that way."

No identifying information on the animal is a "stumbling block" for police to determine what community the dog is from.

Police are appealing for anyone with information about the canine to call the Superior East detachment at 705-856-2233 or Crime Stoppers at 800-461-8326.

"We seem to be hearing lots of rumours, but running into a lot of dead ends," said Dawson.

The dog shooting is considered an "isolated case" with no other reports of animal cruelty in the detachment area.

The animal, called Hope, was adopted by a Sault Ste. Marie family July 9, said Wawa Humane Society volunteer Karin Grundt.

Case Updates

A man charged in connection with a dog being shot and partially blinded will go to trial Feb. 10.

Kenneth Brown Sr., 61, told court here Monday he wishes to represent himself.

OPP Const. Roly MacDonald said Brown hadn't indicated whether or not he believed he was innocent of the criminal charges laid against him in early September.

It's Brown's right to represent himself, MacDonald said.

A two-year-old female German Shepherd mix was found June 10 on Forge Lake Road, near Hawk Junction, with a bullet hole in its head that had blinded its right eye.

The dog was taken to the local Humane Society and treated for about three weeks before being transferred to an animal hospital in Sault Ste. Marie.

After a Sault couple heard of the matter, they decided to adopt the dog, naming it Hope.

When the dog was first discovered on the bush road, it weighed about 30 pounds, but now has doubled that. And despite being blind in one eye, the dog is reportedly doing well.
