Dog shot with .22, resulting in death
Bremerton, WA (US)

Incident Date: Thursday, Jul 24, 2008
County: Kitsap

Disposition: Open

Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

Kitsap County sheriff's deputies are investigating the death of a 10-year-old dog who was shot Thursday while near its house.

The dog had returned its house on the 4100 block of NW Essex Road with a bullet wound to its hindquarters. The surgery to remove the bullet would have cost about $10,000, according to reports. So the family decided the euthanize the white German shepherd, which was named Colonel.

Pasado's Safe Haven, a Sultan-based animal welfare group, is offering a $500 reward for the arrest of a suspect in the shooting.

Deputy Scott Wilson, spokesman for the sheriff's office, said the investigation is continuing.

Deputies were called to the house after the family had let Colonel and another dog out, and Colonel returned home after the other dog, limping and bleeding. The bullet appeared to be from a .22-caliber firearm, reports said.

Tosca Fernandes said her son, Luke, got Colonel when the dog was two years old. The dog went to obedience school and was trained to be a search-and-rescue dog.

Fernandes said the family is struggling with the loss of the pet.

"He is a member of our family," Fernandes said. "He's a partner."
