Hundreds of animals dead and mistreated
Homestead, FL (US)

Incident Date: Thursday, Mar 16, 2000
County: Miami-Dade

Charges: Misdemeanor
Disposition: Alleged

Alleged:
» Jorge Echevarria
» Yani Diaz

Jorge Echevarria and his wife, Yani Diaz, have been charged with hundreds of counts of animal cruelty, confining animals without food and water and improperly disposing of dead and decaying animal carcasses.

The authorities are investigating, trying to find out what happened at the Redland farm where they found hundreds of animals that were dead and mistreated. The farm is located at SW 243rd Street and 167th Avenue. Authorities spent most of Thurs., March 16, at the farm and will return on Friday when they will seize the remaining animals.

Detectives from the Miami-Dade Police Dept Environmental Investigations Unit said they found 14 dead goats and 40 dead chickens on the property. The owners said they've been trying to bury them.

Yani Diaz said, "I explained to them that my husband had an injury two weeks ago. That is why we had the problem, because he was taking care of that before. You know, when you ship 50 goats .. disease is common among livestock. It's very common for four or five goats to die out of 50 goats."

The ASPCA disagrees with her statement and they'll return to the farm on Friday, March 17, to seize the remaining animals that they feel have been mistreated.

The two owners face hundreds of charges. The charges are presently misdemeanors, although the prosecutors can upgrade the charges after additional investigation into the case.
