A dog whose leg was reportedly shot off is at a Phoenix animal hospital waiting for surgery. The dog reportedly lost its leg after being shot in a central Phoenix neighborhood overnight.

A Phoenix police official told ABC15 that a call was made about a dog being shot but the the caller hung up when they saw police were already there.

The dog was shot in a neighborhood near 15th Avenue and Roosevelt Street either Thursday night or early Friday morning.

The dog ran into a building after crews found it and officers from Maricopa County Animal Care and Control were called to get it out.

It is now at a Phoenix animal hospital and an official there said they expect the dog will have surgery Saturday.

There is no word so far on the condition of the dog. It appeared the dog was a Doberman.

The shooting is under investigation.
