Dog shot to death in backyard

Police are searching for the person who fatally shot a family pet in the head early this morning. Ada Tavares called the police about 3:45 a.m. and told them she heard her 3-year-old dog, Princess, barking, then heard a gunshot. After the gunshot, she said she heard a yelp, then silence.

The 35-pound, mixed-breed canine was inside a 5-foot-tall chain-link fence at Tavares' house, at 2139 W. Chestnut St., when it was shot, according to a police report.

Tavares told police she found the dog dead inside of its doghouse. She told police the pet wasn't aggressive.
