Hillsborough County deputies say a man fatally choked the family cat in front of his wife and two daughters, ages 7 and 1.

Lazaro Lastra, 36, choked the animal on Sunday while saying, "This is what happens when you don't listen to me," according to an affidavit.

Lastra, of 2144 S. 78th St., Tampa, was held without bail at Orient Road Jail today. He is charged with felony animal cruelty, felony child abuse, misdemeanor assault and misdemeanor battery.

The affidavit states that Lastra struck his wife on top of her head during the incident at their home about 10:20 p.m. Sunday.

The sheriff's office said no other information was available today as to what triggered the incident.
