A Cook Township man hopes police can bring justice to those who shot and killed his dog, Bo.
"To me, that's murder," said Corey Hauer, 30. "He was our family pet. He couldn't defend himself. He was tied up."
State police in Greensburg are investigating the killing of the dog, a 7-year-old black Labrador that Hauer had since the dog was a puppy.
The shooting occurred between 1 a.m. and 3:15 a.m. Friday at Hauer's home along Old Route 711.
Hauer believes two men he caught vandalizing a neighbor's property may have shot Bo to keep him from alerting anyone to what they were doing.
Hauer said he and his wife, Amanda, heard two gunshots around 3 a.m.
When he went to investigate, nobody was in his yard, but he did come across two men vandalizing a neighboring mobile home. Hauer told the men his wife had called police, and they left.
But Hauer soon realized that something else was amiss.
"The whole time, my dog didn't bark," he said.
He headed into the backyard and found Bo shot at point-blank range. His body was still warm.
"They came right up to him and shot him," Hauer said.
Police said the dog died of a single gunshot wound to the head.
Hauer hopes police can file charges.
"That's wrong, shooting a pet," he said.
