more information on voting

When you vote, you are voting on whether or not the punishment fit the crime, NOT on the severity of the case itself. If you feel the sentence was very weak, you would vote 1 star. If you feel the sentence was very strong, you would vote 5 stars.

Please vote honestly and realistically. These ratings will be used a a tool for many future programs, including a "People’s Choice" of best and worst sentencing, DA and judge "report cards", and more. Try to resist the temptation to vote 1 star on every case, even if you feel that 100 years in prison isn’t enough.

Dogs neglected, mange treated with kerosene
Maddington, WA (AU)

Incident Date: Tuesday, Apr 8, 2008

Disposition: Convicted
Case Images: 2 files available

Defendant/Suspect: Isobel Margaret Fletcher

A Maddington woman has been banned from owning more than two de-sexed dogs after pleading guilty to animal neglect. Isobel Margaret Fletcher, 61, was charged by the RSPCA after five dogs in poor condition were discovered in her care.

One of the dogs, a puppy which had been treated for mange with kerosene, was in such a bad state it had to be put down.

Fletcher admitted neglecting the animals when she appeared in Armadale Magistrates Court today.

She was ordered to surrender two of the surviving dogs to the RSPCA and give an undertaking to have two older dogs desexed if they were to remain in her care.

RSPCA spokesman Richard Barry said outside the court the case was not one of deliberate cruelty but rather an example of an owner not being able to afford proper veterinary care for her pets.

"The RSPCA wanted to send out the message that if you have animals in your care, it is your responsibility to provide proper veterinary treatment for them if they are suffering,'' he said.

"It is certainly not good enough to say 'I do not have the money to go to the vet'.

"Certainly ignorance is not an excuse, either.

"You do not treat a dog for mange with kerosene.''

Mr Barry said the RSPCA would determine if the woman's remaining dogs were too old to have puppies before deciding whether they would be desexed.
