Case Updates: 1 update(s) available

Two 21-year-old men are in the Blue Earth County Jail while prosecutors consider charges after a pet dog was apparently shot with an arrow.

Police Chief Tony Cornish says his department was called last Tuesday after the body of a small dog was recovered from a downtown trash bin following an anonymous tip.

Cornish says he contacted the owner of the Pomeranian in Lake Crystal, and learned that a friend of the owner's daughter had been staying at the residence.

That man apparently admitted to the homeowner that he had staked the dog in the yard then shot it with a bow and arrow. A bloody arrow was recovered.

Cornish says investigators also learned that a second man may have been involved. Both men were arrested on Friday. One is from Mankato, the other from Litchfield.

Felony charges were pending on Monday.

Case Updates

Two Mankato men were released Monday after spending the weekend in jail for allegedly killing a dog in Lake Crystal.

Alex Curtis Krause and Braydon Charles Jerve were arrested Friday for allegedly tying a dog to a stake, shooting it with a hunting arrow, dropping a log on its head before it bled to death and tossing its body into an apartment complex garbage container in Mankato. The dog was owned by Krause's girlfriend in Lake Crystal, Kassi Ziegler, who was sleeping when it was killed, the complaint said.

Ziegler's parents, Tony and Heather Ziegler, became suspicious that Krause had done something to the dog after it disappeared. The Zieglers learned Krause had been staying at their house with their daughter while they were out of town. The dog, a Pomeranian, was gone when they returned.

Krause disliked the dog and suggested in the past that they get rid of it, the complaint said. He was asked about the dog when the Zieglers returned home and allegedly said the dog must have run away.

Mankato police received a tip last week that the dog had been killed in Lake Crystal and its body had been thrown into a garbage container at an apartment complex in the 500 block of Front Street. The Lake Crystal Police Department was contacted because the dog had been killed in that city.

One witness who was interviewed by police reported Jerve said Krause had shot the dog with an arrow. Jerve also told the witness he put the dog "out of its misery" by dropping a log on its head, the criminal complaint said.

When the Zieglers called Krause and asked him about the dog, he admitted to killing it on July 4 with a bow and arrow he had taken from their house, they reported. The arrow that had been used was put back in the house and still had the dog's blood on it, said Lake Crystal Police Chief Tony Cornish.

"We were told the perpetrator apologized for not washing the arrow," he said.

It's not uncommon for the Police Department to get reports of neglected animals, but this case was different, Cornish said.

"This is strange because of the brutal way the dog was killed," he said. "In my opinion it was a thrill kill."

Another felony level animal cruelty incident was reported in November in Lake Crystal, Cornish said. The person charged in that case, Tim Joseph Goettl, is scheduled to go to trial on July 31.

Goettl is accused of putting three puppies in a plastic bag and crushing them with a motor vehicle. That case was reported through a tip made anonymously at the Blue Earth Nicollet County Humane Society. The person making the report said the puppies had been born at Goettl's Lake Crystal residence, but he didn't want them.

Cornish investigated and learned one of the dogs had survived and was living with Goettl's daughter in St. Peter. The remaining two puppies were left in the bag and thrown into a Blue Earth County ditch.

Krause and Jerve were released on their own recognizance after appearing before District Court Judge Kurt Johnson Monday morning. Jerve, who moved to Mankato recently from Litchfield, has also been charged for possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a small amount of marijuana in a motor vehicle. Both men were jailed Friday after warrants were issued for their arrest.
