Robert Mauro was charged in 2006 with abusing a living creature after witnesses reported he beat a crying pit bull that was tied on a short leash on his front porch, said Lt. Veronica Ehrenspeck with the law enforcement division of the Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Mauro pleaded guilty last January. He was fined $250 and required to attend an anger-management program.
