Ottawa police are hunting for a man who they believe broke into a Sandy Hill apartment, beat one cat to death and threw a second animal off the balcony.
A third cat has been reported missing and may also be injured.
Richard Holstein, 24, of Ottawa, is wanted on a slew of animal cruelty charges. Police are also seeking Holstein on four separate counts of breach of probation and one count of breach of release conditions.
He is described as a six-foot white male, 190 lbs, with blue eyes and short blond hair. He is unshaven with a muscular build.
Holstein has several notable tattoos on his body, including names tattooed to the front and back of his neck, "G-Unit" on the back of one hand and "50 Cent" and a heart-shaped tattoo on the other.
Police allege Holstein broke into the Sandy Hill apartment on Wednesday. The Ottawa Humane Society is assisting police with the investigation.
Holstein faces three counts of cruelty to animals, one count each of injuring an animal, mischief, theft under $5,000, break and enter, and two counts of breach of probation.
Anyone with information is asked to call Ottawa police detective Leanne Smith at (613) 236-1222 ext. 5401, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
Case UpdatesPolice have arrested the man wanted for allegedly beating a cat to death and tossing another off a third-floor balcony. Richard Holstein, 24, was arrested yesterday afternoon at the South Keys transit station. He faces several animal cruelty charges.
"We had heard he was in the area and we found him at the (South Keys) transit station," said Staff Sgt. Isobel Anderson. "He was arrested without incident."
Kitty, the cat that was tossed from the balcony, was found last night hiding in a tree, said Sharon Miko, director of operations for the Ottawa Humane Society. It has since been returned to its owner.
"The cat has an injury to its front paw, which I believe might be a fracture," Miko said. "The family is also saying it's terrified of (men)."
Police had been hunting for Holstein after a man broke into an apartment on Wiggins Pvt. on Wednesday, killed a cat named Marble and threw Kitty off the balcony, causing her to fall about 25 feet to the ground below.
Miko said Marble has been sent for an autopsy to confirm the cause of death.
"Under the Ontario SPCA Act, our inspectors are empowered to level charges, if necessary. We will be working closely with the police to determine which charges should be laid," she said.
As for Kitty, the female tabby mix is to see a veterinarian to repair her paw and will then be in for what Miko hopes is a quick recovery, both physically and emotionally.
"From three floors, that cat is very lucky to be alive," she said. | Source: Ottawa Sun - July 13, 2008 Update posted on Jul 13, 2008 - 7:55PM |
