Mother cat and kittens abandoned in box
Fields Landing, CA (US)

Incident Date: Tuesday, Jun 24, 2008
County: Humboldt

Disposition: Open

Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

A mother cat and her three kittens were rescued last Tuesday after being found in a diaper box, taped closed, alongside the road in Fields Landing.

Ed Lunde found the kittens with his dog, Pete, and brought them to the Sequoia Humane Society, the SHS stated in a news release.

Kennel Manager Wanda Regan immediately began emergency first aid and said they could have died without urgent care.

The smallest kitten - weighing only 11 ounces - was also the sickest.

"He was stone cold and covered in feces when he first came in," Regan said. "I didn't know if he'd survive the night."

The mother cat is being kept in isolation due to the contagious nature of her respiratory infection, and the fact that she tested positive for feline leukemia - a virus that attacks the immune system.

However, with some nutritious food, supplements, medicine and a warm bed, the mother cat and her brood are doing well, Regan said.

Once they are completely healthy, then they'll be spayed or neutered and adopted into loving homes.

"The saddest part of this story is that it didn't have to happen," said Cynthia Ryan, SHS executive director. "If the owners of these kitties would have come to us or one of the other rescues we would have helped them."

Animal abandonment and cruelty is a crime, punishable with fines and even possible jail time.
