Grayson, the cat found zipped inside a small insulated lunch bag on Wednesday, is on the mend while being cared for at the Danville Area Humane Society.

The adult male, gray and white cat, with huge green eyes, spent Thursday being checked over by a veterinarian because he was still very lethargic from the experience, according to Paulette Dean, executive director of the Humane Society.

A man came home at about 7:40 p.m. Wednesday and found a woman who also lives at the house unconscious on the back porch, Danville police said, adding the lunch bag with the cat inside was found next to the woman.

Dean said Friday that she had learned the cat's name and said he was recovering well, but could not release any more information about the case.

So the mystery of how Grayson came to be in the bag will remain a mystery for a while, since his owner remains hospitalized and no information on her condition is available.

Lt. Mike Mondul said Thursday that details about the owner's name and condition could not be released due to HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) privacy laws.

Mondul said the investigation is continuing, looking for answers to why the woman was found unresponsive and whether there is a cruelty to animals issue involved.

"It's a very unusual set of circumstances," he said. "We want to be sure to investigate fully before pressing charges or closing the case."
