Dog beaten to death during burglary

Two Rogers men have been charged in connection with a string of residential burglaries, and in one of the incidents, they are accused of attacking and beating a dog with baseball bats.

Cory Daniel Rusher, 21, is charged with five counts of residential burglaries, a class B felony, and cruelty to animals, a class A misdemeanor. If convicted of residential burglary, Rusher could receive a sentence of five to 20 years on each of the felony counts and up to a year in jail for the cruelty offense.

He pleaded not guilty during an arraignment Monday. An omnibus hearing in the case is scheduled for 8: 30 a.m. Aug. 14.

Landon Michael Dalton, 18, is charged with three counts of residential burglary and cruelty to animals. Dalton's arraignment is scheduled for 8: 30 a.m. July 14 in Circuit Judge David Clinger's court.

Rusher is accused of committing residential burglaries on March 23 at 1600 W. Persimmon St., on March 24 at 973 North St., on April 9 at 717 Chateau Drive and on April 11 at 2437 and 2434 W. Olrich St.

Dalton is charged in connection with an April 5 residential burglary at 1002 West Maple St. and with the crimes on West Olrich Street, according to court documents.

Rusher and Dalton admitted to beating a dog with baseball bats at the 2437 W. Olrich St. residence, court documents state. The dog suffered a broken jaw and several skull fractures, according to court documents.

Rusher told Larry Taylor, a detective with the Rogers Police Department, that he had a problem with breaking into houses. Rusher pointed out the addresses of at least 10 of the houses.

Deputy Prosecutor David Reading said Rusher and Dalton could face additional charges. Reading also said a juvenile was arrested in connection with the crimes.

According to court documents, Rusher was identified as a suspect in at least a dozen residential burglaries in Rogers.

Rusher is being held in the Benton County Jail in lieu of $ 100, 000 bond.
