County: Hopewell CityDisposition: Open
Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!
Police are investigating an animal cruelty case after several ducks were shot at a city park.
A number of ducks were found Thursday morning at Crystal Lake Park apparently shot with a shotgun, Hopewell Bureau of Police Lt. Joe Sumner of Hopewell said.
"We're investigating it. We have no other leads at this time," he said.
Malcolm Covington of Hopewell Recreation and Parks said about half a dozen ducks had been hanging around the lake lately. He believed four were found dead.
Crystal Lake Park is located at 3502 River Road.
People at an afternoon barbecue heard about the shooting and chalked it up to bored kids. Most local schools are out for the summer. Several boys with a net were seen chasing a duck around the lake Thursday evening.
"It's a shame somebody killed them. I just assumed some kids killed them," said Mike Firment, who said he comes to the park infrequently.
While police did not elaborate on what charges would apply, animal cruelty is a Class 1 misdemeanor. It carries a fine up to $2,500 and 12 months in jail. Discharging a gun without injuring a person carries the same penalty.
