Animal cruelty Albuquerque, NM (US)Incident Date: Sunday, Feb 17, 2008 County: Bernalillo
Disposition: Alleged
Alleged: Louie Lopez
A war veteran caught off guard when he was attacked in his own back yard is getting some help and resting easier because of a special delivery.
World War II veteran Gene Rowland received a La-Z-Boy chair on Friday.
Jeff Mauldin of La-Z-Boy furniture galleries said he donated the chair to Rowland because he didn't think Rowland deserved the hand he was dealt.
Rowland doesn't either.
"I never thought a guy would jump over the fence into your yard and you'd get assaulted," Rowland said.
But that's what Rowland said happened in February, all because of his dog Daisy's barking.
Louie Lopez was arrested in connection with the assault that left Rowland with a broken leg and a broken hip.
Thanks to Friday's delivery, Rowland's spirit as well as his body is healing.
That's exactly for what Mauldin was hoping.
"I just saw a situation where this is my chance, so I just did it. I'm glad I did it," Mauldin said.
"I really appreciate what he did," Rowland said.
With a new favorite spot, Rowland and his dog Daisy said they may stay inside from now on.
Meanwhile, Lopez is expected to go before a judge again for a pretrial hearing on June 30.
He's charged with aggravated battery, cruelty to animals, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, assault and trespassing. References « More cases in Bernalillo County, NM
