Two men have been arrested and more than 60 roosters seized in a raid of an alleged cockfighting operation in Bernalillo County.
Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Erin Kinnard Thompson says 48-year-old Silvestre Rodela and 70-year-old Jose Perez have been charged with extreme cruelty to animals, a felony.
Bernalillo County Sheriff Darren White says deputies conducting the raid found three dead roosters and five badly injured ones on the property.
Kinnard Thompson says Perez reportedly told deputies he had brought several roosters to Rodela's residence to fight.
Cockfighting was outlawed in New Mexico last year.
Kinnard Thompson says deputies also seized 60 caged roosters, documents that tracked bets and boxes of blades to attach to the roosters' feet. References « More cases in Bernalillo County, NM
