Dog stabbed during home robbery Airds, NSW (AU)Incident Date: Tuesday, Jun 3, 2008
Disposition: Alleged
Alleged: 16 year old male
A 16-year-old youth has been charged with cruelty to animals over his alleged involvement in an armed robbery this month, which left a couple battered and one of their terriers fatally hacked with a machete.
The Maltese terriers had intervened after three men wearing balaclavas forced their way inside a house in Cheviot Place, Airds, near Campbelltown, on June 3, police said.
The men demanded money and then punched the owners - a 60-year-old man and a 56-year-old woman - in the face and body, police said.
The small dogs tried to protect the couple, but one of the robbers stabbed the older animal, aged about 10, a number of times with a machete, police said. It had to be euthanised later by a vet.
The other dog was kicked a number of times by the other two robbers, and suffered internal injuries, police said.
The men then rummaged through the house, before leaving via a back door.
Police yesterday raided a house in Springfield Place, Airds, where they found a black balaclava and a large knife sheath.
They later arrested a 16-year-old Airds youth at a nearby school.
He was charged with break and enter, robbery and and cruelty against animals.
He was refused bail and was due to face Campbelltown Children's Court today. References
