Puppy miller charged again
Charleston, NY (US)

Incident Date: Sunday, Jun 1, 2008
County: Montgomery

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Dake Fu

Case Updates: 1 update(s) available

An alleged puppy mill proprietor was arrested Sunday for the second time in two years for allegedly selling sick or diseased animals.

Dake Fu, 27, was charged under the state's Agriculture and Markets Law with two counts of selling sick animals through his business, Turquoise Island Inc. on Toback Road in Charleston, Montgomery County Sheriff's deputies said.

Deputies said numerous customers complained that they purchased diseased animals that needed extensive and costly medical care.

The incident is not Fu's first brush with the law for running an alleged puppy mill. In May 2006, 14 feces-covered dogs were taken from his property and he was charged with misdemeanor counts of cruelty to animals.

According to information from that incident, authorities said the dogs were in a garage and a storage shed at the rear of the property without sunlight or proper ventilation for at least two months before they were discovered. Their food was covered with mold.

Additionally, two German shepherd puppies sold by Fu died of parvo -- a viral disease that attacks the intestines and hearts of puppies -- in September 2005 soon after he handed them over to their new owners, according to a complaint filed at the time with the state by the owners of the dogs. The disposition of that case could not be determined Sunday.

In December 2005, Fu failed a state Department of Agriculture and Markets inspection for poor sanitation and waste removal. An inspector's remarks, dated Dec. 12, 2005, noted that dogs were living on bare wood floors in his Albany home on Briar Avenue and did not have adequate room to avoid their own excrement.

His pet dealer's license was not revoked at that time. As of Sunday, he was still listed as a licensed dealer on the state's Web site.

Case Updates

A man turned himself in to police Sunday for allegedly selling diseased animals at a puppy mill.

Dake Fu, 27, of 121 Toback Road, the proprietor of the Turquois Island Puppy Mill, has been charged with two counts of selling or offering diseased animals or exposing sick or diseased animals for sale, according to a press release from the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office.

The investigation began after several people made complaints saying they had purchased animals from Fu that were sick and diseased and it cost them extensive fees to rehabilitate the animals.

Fu was released on appearance tickets and is scheduled to be back in Charleston Court on June 19 at 7 p.m.

This is not the first time Fu has faced animal abuse charges. In 2006, a jury acquitted Fu on 15 counts of animal cruelty. Authorities in May 2006 had seized the dogs from his Toback Road residence. They described dogs covered with feces and urine and feces on the floor.
