Pit bull neglect, fighting suspected DeSoto, TX (US)Incident Date: Wednesday, May 28, 2008 County: Dallas
Disposition: Alleged
Alleged: Kedrick Shanard Mackey
A DeSoto man has been arrested on charges on animal cruelty and according to detectives on the case, those charges may be upgraded to illegal dog fighting.
DeSoto Animal Control was called to Kedreck Mackey's house in the 1400 block of Hubert Street after receiving a complaint from a neighbor. When they arrived, they found six pit bulls in his back yard.
DeSoto police say the dogs appeared to be malnourished and had clear indications that they were involved in illegal dog fighting.
"The dogs had cuts and scars and some were missing teeth and you could see their ribs coming through their skin," said DeSoto Police Cpl. Ted May.
Animal control seized the dogs and took them to a local shelter in neighboring Cedar Hill.
Mackey said the dogs are not malnourished and claims the cuts and scars are the result of playful roughhousing. "That's just the way the dogs play. I have a litter of pit bulls, and I can show you how they play," he said.
Mackey claims the City of DeSoto is targeting pit bulls for no good reason and said Animal Control is rounding up the breed at will.
Animal Control says the only time it seizes a dog is after they have received a complaint and they deem the dog dangerous.
"We are a call-driven agency, whether it's a Chihuahua or a Basset Hound, we treat all dogs the same as pit bulls," said Charles Humphrey DeSoto Code Services.
Along with the cuts and scars DeSoto police are talking to a witness who saw the dogs fighting. The City of DeSoto does not have an ordinance banning pit bulls, however, it has an aggressive policy regarding dangerous dogs. References« TX State Animal Cruelty Map « More cases in Dallas County, TX
