A 23-year-old man is under investigation for animal abuse after witnesses said they saw him run over one kitten and seriously injure another after throwing them out of his pickup truck window near Washington city on Saturday.
Washington County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Robert Tersigni said witnesses told a responding deputy that on Saturday afternoon they saw a man pull to the side of Washington Dam Road just outside Washington city limits and throw three kittens out of his truck. The witnesses, who had been driving behind the man, pulled over as the man sped away.
Tersigni said witnesses saw one of the kittens killed instantly by the truck, and when they stopped, found another kitten severely injured. That kitten later required a leg amputation and is recovering. The third kitten was traumatized but unhurt.
Tersigni said the witnesses were not able to positively identify the man, but that an investigation is ongoing and the case would be submitted to the Washington County District Attorney.
Case UpdatesA man was arrested over the weekend after police say he threw several kittens out of truck and ran over one of them.
A 23-year-old man was spotted tossing the 3-week-old kittens, throwing one of them more than 10 feet into some bushes, according to a statement from the Washington County Sheriff's Office.
The kitten found in the bushes was severely injured and did not survive a surgery to repair its legs. Another kitten was killed after being run over by the suspect's truck, police said. A third kitten was uninjured.
"This incident was horrible," Chief Deputy Rob Tersigni said in a prepared statement. "We want people to realize that if they are going to behave this way, there will be consequence."
The suspect was booked into the Washington County Jail on suspicion of three counts of animal cruelty, a third-degree felony. | Source: Deseret News - May 27, 2008 Update posted on May 29, 2008 - 1:33AM |
