Dog shot with .22, resulting in death Buckeye, AZ (US)Incident Date: Tuesday, Dec 11, 2007 County: Maricopa
Charges: Misdemeanor, Felony Non-CTA Disposition: Alleged
Alleged: Jaime L. Brito
A 27-year-old Buckeye-area man has been arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty and related charges after he shot a neighbor's dog, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said Tuesday [May 27, 2008].
Jaime L. Brito was arrested May 20 after the Dec. 11 shooting, the Sheriff's Office said. He faces misdemeanor animal- cruelty and endangerment charges and a felony charge of disorderly conduct involving weapons.
According to the Sheriff's Office, Brito shot a neighbor's pit bull that had fought with his German shepherd. The German shepherd reportedly got into the neighbor's yard on Roosevelt Street west of Sun Valley Parkway, where the dogs fought.
The Sheriff's Office said the suspect fired a .22-caliber rifle at the pit bull, hitting it in the stomach. He fired the gun near the pit bull's owner and close to an occupied structure and through a chain-link fence when the dog posed no threat, the office said.
The pit bull was later euthanized.
Capt. Paul Chagolla said he did not know why the arrest came so long after the incident. He added that some cases require additional time to conduct follow-up investigation and develop the probable cause needed for an arrest.
"It's not unusual" for it to take time to locate a suspect, he added. References« AZ State Animal Cruelty Map « More cases in Maricopa County, AZ
