Five dogs left without food, water
Royal Palm Beach, FL (US)

Incident Date: Friday, May 16, 2008
County: Palm Beach

Charges: Misdemeanor
Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Mark Teal

The only two dog-food bowls were filled with feces. The refrigerator was filled with rotten food and cockroaches.

Five dogs living in the Royal Palm Beach home were left without food or water, and three of them were crammed into small metal crates, the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office said.

The dogs' owner, Mark Teal, 20, was arrested Friday and charged with animal cruelty and confinement after deputies executed a search warrant on the home in the 12000 block of 55th Road North. Neighbors notified deputies, reporting a stench of urine and feces coming from the home. Deputies discovered a dog crammed into a crate in the bathroom.

"There was no ventilation inside the bathroom. The air was stagnant and the smell of urine and feces was overwhelming. ... The dog could barely stand up inside the crate and did not have sufficient room to move or turn around," Detective Cassie Kovacs wrote in her arrest report.

Inside an adjacent room was another crate, she wrote. This crate had two pit bulls crammed inside without food or water, only waste, Kovacs wrote.

Teal was convicted of carrying a concealed weapon last year, state records show.

Because the home was so filthy, with a broken toilet and bathroom wall that was falling into the bathtub, Teal's mother, Judith Teal, 45, was charged with child neglect, Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Teri Barbera said. She has a son, 14, living in her home as well.

Neighbors said the dogs could sometimes be seen tied up to a tree with electrical wire or seen searching in garbage for food. The dogs were taken to Palm Beach County Animal Care & Control to be evaluated. They will either be put up for adoption or euthanized.
