Horse starved to death
Salmo, BC (CA)

Incident Date: Thursday, Feb 7, 2008

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Gordon Powell

May 6 saw Salmo resident Gordon Powell make his first appearance in the Nelson Courthouse on animal cruelty charges.

On February 7, the BC SPCA executed a search warrant to seize the body of a dead horse after being contacted by the RCMP.

The horse was taken to a veterinarian to have a necropsy performed on it.

"The veterinarian's report indicated that the horse was extremely emaciated," said BC SPCA Special Const. Eric Enkirch.

Powell's next court date is June 3 in Nelson.

If convicted on the cruelty charges, he could receive up to six months in jail, a maximum fine of $2,000 and a prohibition on owning animals for a time determined by the judge.

Note: Classifications and other fields should not be used to determine what specific charges the suspect is facing or was convicted of - they are for research and statistical purposes only. The case report and subsequent updates outline the specific charges. Charges referenced in the original case report may be modified throughout the course of the investigation or trial, so case updates, when available, should always be considered the most accurate reflection of charges.
