An Oceanside man was arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty after officers were called to his home Sunday night, police said.

Officers arrived at 9:45 p.m. to find blood leading to the man's home on Tiberon Drive near Los Mochis Way, and a dead dog with massive head injuries in a trash can, police said.

The 44-year-old man inside the home was wearing clothing with blood on it, police said. He was arrested and booked into the county jail in Vista. The man faces a felony charge of animal cruelty and parole violation charges.

Police said they don't know why the dog was killed.
