Pevely police will seek criminal charges against a man they say shot a neighbor's dog without cause. Ron Weeks, Pevely police chief, said the incident occurred last week on Second Street after a dog escaped its owner's yard and entered a neighbor's.
Weeks said the man shot the 35-pound dog once with a .45 caliber handgun."He said the dog was attacking him," Weeks said. "He shot the dog once in the body."
Weeks said there was no indication the man was in imminent danger prior to the shooting.
"We had no evidence to indicate as such," he said. "You can't discharge a weapon in Pevely and you can't shoot a dog unless you are in fear for your life or are being attacked."
Weeks said there were no witnesses to the event.
Police say the dog was not on a leash and had roamed into the neighbor's unfenced yard.
Following the incident, the shooter called police, who confiscated his firearm at the scene.
Police are expected to seek charges of unlawful use of a weapon, animal abuse and property damage against the shooter, who will remain unidentified unless charged. References« MO State Animal Cruelty Map
