Griffin Pipe Products Corp. was fined $2,256 on Tuesday after pleading guilty to eight counts of animal abuse. Two employees had been ordered to kill pigeons on the property.

The New Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals began investigating on April 6. Initially, the SPCA charged two employees as the shooters.

But the charges against the employees were dropped when company officials admitted the men were carrying out orders.

In New Jersey, shooting pigeons or other animals without cause is illegal.

"There won't be any more shootings there," said SPCA officer Charles Gerofsky. "And it will alert people in other areas that it's illegal.
