Kitten burned with cigarettes
Columbus, OH (US)

Incident Date: Tuesday, Apr 22, 2008
County: Franklin

Disposition: Open

Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

A kitten covered in burns was dumped at a local shelter -- and almost lost an ear because of abuse.

"This is one of the worst as far as animal abuse goes,' said Mona McKinnis, of Colony Rescue.

Cigarette burns between the kitten's ears, down her throat and down her back still look raw and painful

"To think about what somebody did to inflict these burns, someone had to hold her while someone else did this. That's just horrendous," McKinnis said.

Named after her burns, Burnice was abandoned at a local shelter.

"The stuff you see in rescue blows your mind and you wonder if they do this to a cat, what are they doing to children?" McKinnis said.

McKinnis wants to know who burned Burnice.

"If they're doing this to one, they're doing it to many. That needs to be stopped," she said.

But even if the suspects are found, McKinnis said animal abuse laws and penalties in Ohio are too lax.

"They need to be changed. Animals pay the price. They're suffering every day with abuse, killing (and) torture," McKinnis said.

Burnice's fur may never grow back, but she is regaining her confidence. Now she needs a good home.

The rescue group said Burnice would do best in a quiet home.
