Dog-fighting - at least 12 dogs, 4 found dead
Raleigh, NC (US)

Incident Date: Thursday, May 8, 2003
County: Wake

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Gary Lewis Long

Authorities arrested a Raleigh man for operating a dog-fighting ring in his back yard. The bodies of four dogs were found in the raid. Gary Lewis Long faces one count of operating a dog fighting ring, five counts of felony cruelty to animals and five misdemeanor counts of the same offense.

Several people were arrested and charged with resisting arrest because they ran after spotting officers. Deputies also found the carcasses of four dead dogs along the banks of the pond of Long's property.

The Wake County Sheriff's Office says the fights involved at least twelve pit bulls and occurred in a carpeted, barn-like shed on Long's property in southern Wake County.

Investigators called the scene gruesome and Wake County Animal Control manager Nancy Clemmons said several of the dogs needed medical attention.

"Numerous dogs had facial scarring, leg scarring... several had fresh open wounds on their muzzles and their limbs," Clemmons told NBC 17. The investigation began last month when sheriff's deputies found two pit bulls fighting on Long's property. Investigators won't say whether there was betting on the dogfights.

Lewis is out on a $6,500 secured bond. If convicted on all counts, he could face up to 2 1/2 years in jail.
