David Glenn Larkins, 24, 112 W. Maple St., No. 2, is charged with animal cruelty. His Monday Washington County Sessions Court arraignment was set back because of a delay in transporting him to court.

Robert McCurry, a Johnson City public safety officer, said he was sent to Larkins' apartment Friday afternoon and met with Rebecca Whaley, who lives next door. She told him that she had bought her son, Richard, a 7-week-old kitten, which she said had been missing since 10 p.m. Thursday.

She said Larkins told her and her son that he had "snapped its neck and threw it in the trash." McCurry said he asked Larkins what had happened and was told that the cat had defecated on the floor, causing him to injure the cat as Mrs. Whaley described.

"Mr. Larkins showed no remorse and said he did not care that he killed the Whaleys' cat," McCurry said.

Larkins was being held at the Washington County Detention Center in lieu of posting a $5,000 bond. But when the sheriff's department did not get him to court on time Monday, Sessions Judge John Kiener released him on a recognizance bond. He said a defendant is entitled to a speedy resolution of his case.
