County: Danville CityDisposition: Alleged
Alleged: Jacob Dudley
Ten pit bulls, most of them puppies, are temporarily being housed at the Danville Area Humane Society's shelter after animal control officers recovered them from unsanitary conditions Thursday on Morris Avenue.
"It wasn't a matter of absolute cruelty or dog fighting," Paulette Dean, executive director of the Humane Society said Monday, but she said the dogs' owner, Jacob Dudley, had failed to provide adequate living conditions for the dogs.
"They were not terribly well-cared for," Desmond Touchstone, an animal control officer, said Monday. "They were in poor living conditions, (any conditions) that could cause imminent safety or health problems."
Using testimony from neighbors who repeatedly complained to police, the Humane Society and animal control officers were able to obtain a search warrant.
"Some of them (the dogs) are about six months old," Dean said. "Some are little babies that are still with their momma."
Dudley also was charged with operating an unlicensed kennel.
Residents within Danville's city limits are not allowed to own more than five dogs, Touchstone said.
Dean said that the Humane Society won't seek permanent custody of the dogs, and is working with Dudley to create better living conditions.
The dogs will be returned when he has created a "proper environment;" plenty of clean and dry space and a solid resting surface, she said.
