Maricopa County Sheriff's deputies said they encountered one of the worst animal abuse cases after an arrest warrant of a Queen Creek man led them to a dog so malnourished it weighed one third of its average weight.
Deputies arrested 33-year-old William White at his home near 196th Street and East Canary Road on Sunday night, according to a statement by media relations commander Capt. Paul Chagolla.
Deputies were going to arrest White on a warrant for probation violation when they found an Irish Wolfhound searching for food in a neighbor's yard.
The dog was infested with ticks and was so thin that its hip bone caused an open wound, according to the statement.
On average, this breed weighs between 120 and 140 pounds. The dog rescued weighed 32 pounds.
Deputies sent the dog to a contracted veterinarian clinic in Phoenix.
Case UpdatesMaricopa County Sheriff's Office deputies arrested a 33 year old Queen Creek man on a warrant for probation violation/assault and charged him with one count of felony animal cruelty charges late last night. He was booked into Fourth Avenue Jail. The arrest of William White, DOB 8/5/74, came two days after deputies went to White's residence at 19000 block of East Canary Road and found the dog scavenging for food in a neighbor's yard. The dog, an Irish Wolfhound, was severely malnourished (photos attached) and infested with ticks. The dog was so thin, the hip bone pushed through the skin causing an open wound. This breed should weigh between 120 and 140 pounds. This dog weighed in at only 32 pounds. The Sheriff's animal cruelty investigators took the dog to a contracted vet clinic in Phoenix for treatment where it remains today in guarded condition.
"My policy is to book directly into jail those arrested animal abuse, regardless of whoever the suspect might be," says Sheriff Arpaio. "I will continue to crackdown on people who abuse animal." | Source: Maricopa County Sheriff's Department Press Release Update posted on Apr 15, 2008 - 2:44PM |
