It was a sight Garden City resident Don Warfield wasn't expecting. Saturday morning, he did what he usually does -- take out the trash.

But instead of opening the lid to the Dumpster next to his home and throwing the bag of trash in, he looked down. And what he saw surprised him.

"I go to take out the trash only to open the lid and find two eyes staring up at me," Warfield said.

Inside the Dumpster was a baby Chihuahua, about 8 weeks old, covered in motor oil.

Warfield took the dog home, fed her and called Danna Jones, a friend and volunteer of the Finney County Humane Society.

"Someone put that dog there," he said. "It had probably been there all night."

In light of the recent discovery of dogs found in Dumpsters, city officials and residents want to get the word out about the law and the proper disposal of dead animals.

In Garden City, it is illegal to dispose of a live or dead animal in a Dumpster, though it has occurred on a frequent basis, said Howard Lehman, foreman of the city's solid waste department.

He said his employees have found several dead dogs in Dumpsters. Lehman said employees also have found dead cats and cow and goat parts in Dumpsters.

"Sometimes people go to the trouble of burying their dead pet under mounds of trash, and other times they just toss them in," he said.

The dog, known as Princess, was adopted. Her new owner, Dustie Stevens of Scott City, said she loves Chihuahuas and was looking for a second one to keep her other dog company when she came across the baby Chihuahua.

"She is just so sweet and young," Stevens said. "It upsets me to find out someone threw her in a Dumpster."
