Two officers and a police dog, who police said were stabbed by a 24-year-old man before he was fatally shot by police in Santa Clara on Saturday morning, have been released from the hospital, officials said Monday.
Scott Fitzgerald, a 16-year veteran, and Troy Johnsen, an eight-year veteran, are on paid administrative leave while the investigation continues.
Both officers and Ares, a 7-year-old German shepherd, were treated and released, said Santa Clara police Lt. Michael Sellers.
Police received reports of an argument and disturbances at 2548 Crystal Drive around 3:45 a.m. Saturday, where there was an after-hours party, said Sellers.
When police arrived, the man was in the house next door at 2554 Crystal Drive. He had allegedly stabbed a friend at the party, jumped through the window, ran next door and jumped through the neighbors' window, causing them to flee, said Sellers.
The man allegedly stabbed another friend inside neighboring home when the friend tried to calm him down, police said.
Both victims were treated for minor injuries.
When Fitzgerald, Johnsen and Ares arrived, the suspect had barricaded himself in a bedroom. The officers tried to negotiate with the man and when that didn't work, they sent Ares in, said Sellers.
The man allegedly stabbed Ares and brandished the knife at the officers who then shot him, police said.
Emergency personal pronounced him dead at the scene, according to Sellers. References« CA State Animal Cruelty Map « More cases in Santa Clara County, CA
