Horse neglect, 4 seized
Calhan, CO (US)

Incident Date: Sunday, Jun 6, 2004
County: El Paso

Charges: Misdemeanor
Disposition: Convicted
Case Images: 1 files available

Defendant/Suspect: Gina Johnston

Gina Johnston was convicted of the 04M4573 case on 6-29-04 (misdemeanor). In the 2004 case, where four horses were seized after an anonymous tip to the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region, the defendant admitted that she had financial troubles and said "I know better", according to reports. She was then being monitored per a court order and continued to have excuses for the horses poor conditions, including "lice" at one point and then later claimed her water was "toxic".

All of the animals were examined by veterinarians, including blood panels. Based on the examinations and the results of the blood panels, the veterinarian reportedly concluded that the horses were all suffering from malnourishment. All of the horses survived their ordeal and have since been adopted into wonderful homes.

The case was investigated primarily by Officers Jamie Norris and Shawn Million who are both Animal Welfare Officers for the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region.

The 4 seized horses were returned to Gina Johnston after the 2004 case, but not after the 2006 or 2007 cases.

Note: Classifications and other fields should not be used to determine what specific charges the suspect is facing or was convicted of - they are for research and statistical purposes only. The case report and subsequent updates outline the specific charges. Charges referenced in the original case report may be modified throughout the course of the investigation or trial, so case updates, when available, should always be considered the most accurate reflection of charges.
